Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters

Globalization is a phenomenon that causes blurred limits and create a more homogeneous world. It permits to expound and export even cultures. Mass media have created a global village where information and communication is almost instantaneous. Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters are an example of that phenomenon that become possible that in the other side of the world people can know and share some distinctive characteristics with totally different groups of people and cultures. They are from Bangkok and they feel identify with Mexican Gangsters.

Using tattoos, clothes, and specific hairstyles they emulate mexican group also known as "cholos". They probably took the inspiration from youtube and movies that represents a part of Mexican culture and the appreciation of their aesthetic. Although they love the appearance of Mexican gangsters, they rejected their brutal violence, no one of those "Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters"want to imitate the violence that is often associated with real Latino bands. The biggest difference between those two groups is that Bangkok's 'Mexican' Gangsters have legal jobs and they don't deal with drugs.

Fashionable cultures are now a big show of the reach of Mass media and how it could change the way that we perceive the world. It could also extend and change our paradigms and promote our other's comprehension and maybe to adapt some cultural practices and values that we want to have to our lifestyle.

  1. I agree with you. The globalization has made that people from different countries can exchange the different aspect that compose their cultures. In this sense, the globalization want to create an homogenous world in which whatever subculture could be adopted by different kinds of social groups in the world. It is important to remark that globalization is supported by the capitalism. Therefore, the capitalism is the economic system that make possible the expansión of the mass media, and the generation of more culture appropriation. Personally, I don´t share the opinión that this kind of cultural appropriation is something justified. For me, the Thais are involved, and are promoting a culture that was formed in the violence. If the persons do not want to fall in this, it is important that comprehend first the culture they want to adopt.

But in this case have a good influence because Give the oportunitie to thisthai group to find something which they feel identified like the mexican´s gangsters style, also we can infer that globalization have an important influence in the customs or characteristics of the subcultures or maybe un dominants cultures.

  3. Globalization has a great influence in our current world because it helps us to have a wide view of the others. This cases could not happen years ago but nowadys it is very common that we identify with something very far from our country like music artists or groups. If we want to recreate a subculture we must be respectful with their ideals but modify them if we consider it necessary.

  7. Daniela, I agree with your opinion regarding this subculture that has manifested in Bangkok. As social communicators understand perfectly what the concept of globalization in terms of communication. A global village where communication boundaries practically no longer exist. All this leads to countries as far away feel empathy for other cultural aspects of coming to imitate them in the good aspects.
